JORDI C. MARTÍNEZ-CID IS A PARTNER WITH EXTENSIVE EXPERIENCE REPRESENTING FINANCIAL INSTITUTIONS, MEDIA AND ENTERTAINMENT COMPANIES, AND INTERNATIONAL CLIENTS IN A WIDE VARIETY OF MATTERS AT ALL STAGES OF LITIGATION AND ARBITRATION.

Mr. Martínez-Cid regularly represents businesses of all sizes in all manner of litigation, both as plaintiffs and defendants. He counts among his clients banks and other financial institutions, media and entertainment companies, healthcare companies, and high-net-worth individualsamong othersin complex proceedings both domestically and abroad. He has worked in-house with NBCUniversal and Telemundo, overseeing a broad range of both domestic and international litigation matters for those entities and their affiliates. He also represents both corporate and individual clients in appellate matters, fraud-related cases, internal investigations, extradition cases, and cases seeking post-conviction relief.

Prior to launching Martínez-Cid Law, Mr. Martínez-Cid was a partner at a premier litigation boutique in Miami. Prior to that he worked at a large international law firm and clerked for the Honorable Federico A. Moreno for the United States District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

Mr. Martínez-Cid is a graduate of the Yale Law School, where he was a Jack B. Tate scholar and a teaching fellow for First-Order Logic. During law school he interned for Miami’s most well-known plaintiff-side firms.

At the University of Michigan, Mr. Martínez-Cid was a member of the Honors Program, a James B. Angell Scholar, a Michigan Community Scholar, and a member of the College of Language, Science, and Arts’ Academic Judiciary Committee.

REPRESENTATIONS

·      Obtained a complete defense verdict at trial for an engineering firm whose former executive was suing for nearly a million dollars. 

·    Led a cross-border internal investigation into potential corruption issues for a Fortune 100 company.

·       Secured the dismissal of a lawsuit, for lack of personal jurisdiction, alleging tens of millions of dollars in damages against a group of foreign manufacturers.

·       Led the defense of a class action lawsuit against a marine mammal park and obtained a very favorable settlement for the client before the commencement of discovery.

·   Retained to serve as appellate counsel in a multimillion-dollar dispute that the client had lost at summary judgment and at trial and obtained a complete reversal.

·       Represented a Latin American former head of state in extradition proceedings, obtained an order releasing said individual on bond despite the presumption against such release, and dealt with numerous issues of first impression.

·       Secured the dismissal of a fraud complaint against a banker alleged to have been involved in a multimillion-dollar real estate scheme.

·       Represented a bank in the financial technology sector with regards to an examination by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation.

·       Spearheaded an internal investigation for a Central American bank regarding internal controls and anti-money laundering measures.

·       Represented a consortium of construction companies in Panama in arbitrations concerning a large infrastructure project and evaluated the clients’ right to bring international arbitration claims under the relevant bilateral investment treaties.

·       Represented a U.S. national in a claim against a Central American sovereign for wrongful expropriation of an investment worth tens of millions of dollars.

·       Advised an international conglomerate regarding potential claims against a South American sovereign.

·       Advised a terminal services company regarding potential liability arising from operation of a South American port.

·       Represented the CEO of a Latin American telecommunications company in the successful recoupment of assets from the Drug Enforcement Administration.

COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT

Mr. Martínez-Cid maintains an active presence in the community.  He is on the Board of Directors for both the Cuban-American Bar Association and CABA Pro Bono. He has been appointed by the federal judiciary to serve on both the Southern District of Florida’s Hispanic Heritage Committee and the Roadways on the Bench Committee. He recently termed out as chair for one of the Florida Bar’s Eleventh Circuit Judicial Circuit grievance committees.

He is a founding member of the Miami Very Young Arbitration Practitioners Group. In 2013 and 2014, Mr. Martínez-Cid served as a Steering Committee Member for the International Litigation and Arbitration Conference hosted by the International Law Section of the Florida Bar, and served as a moderator for a panel concerning discovery practices in international arbitration.

Mr. Martínez-Cid serves as a member of the steering committee for the Yale Law School Association of Miami, and is an alumni delegate for the Belen Jesuit Alumni Association. He is the two-time recipient of the E. Randolph Williams Award given for exceptional pro bono service and has represented unaccompanied minor immigrants in proceedings before state and administrative courts.  He also represented a woman of limited means in a bench trial to recover assets under Florida’s proceedings supplementary statute.
